Global
nanocapsules market is anticipated to grow over the forecast period on account
of its upcoming and increasing demand in the pharmaceutical and food and
beverage industry. Nanocapsules are colloids which have their particle
dimensions measured in nanometers such as emulsion of oil and water or
biological lipids. They have their applications for drug delivery, cosmetics,
food enhancement, self-healing of materials and for nutraceuticals. Researchers
from the Biotechnology & Food Engineering Department at the Israeli Institute
of Technology, created nanocapsules few years back, based on the natural food
components. These natural food components have vitamins and health-enhancing
nutrients trapped in them which usually don’t dissolve properly in liquids.
Nanocapsules can thus be added to drinks for protecting the nutrients inside
them impacting the richness of food and beverage industry globally.
The
application process of nanocapsules involves a famous technology which is used
currently worldwide, termed as layer-by-layer (LBL). Layer-by-layer technology
constitutes several tools for making nano and micro-sized capsules having their
advantages in pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical industries. They are widely
used in this technology for the development of variety of advanced
drug-delivery products, food ingredients, nutraceuticals, foodstuffs,
diagnostics, biosensors, enzyme catalysts, paper and paints. LBL comprises a
set of encapsulation methods developed by a group of scientists at the
Max-Planck-Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (Germany). During its process,
capsules are built layer-wise in a series of steps with each step characterized
by the consolidation of polyelectrolyte molecules which form an ultra-thin
layer of polymer. A polyelectrolyte is now selected for each layer for bearing
the opposite charge of its previous layer. The electrostatic interaction
between the consolidated polymers forms highly dense capsule shells at the
last. Companies such as Capsulution Nanoscience AG, use this technology for its
various other end uses, including its usage for non-invasive blood sugar
measurement, and for protection and stabilization of low-soluble drug
substances.

Nanocapsules
were used in a recent research study conducted by UCLA Samueli school of
engineering and applied science. The research was based on developing a new
delivery platform inside a cell that uses nanocapsules. Nanocapsules can be
monitored according to their cellular environment owing to their attributes of
having thin polymer shells and protein-core. Clinicians follow a method which
involves sending healthy proteins directly inside the human cells by replacing
the malfunctioning ones. It is the most safe and direct approach to treat
diseases. Usually during this process the cells get broken down frequently or
are digested by enzymes before they reach their target. This adversely affects
the process by lowering down its delivery efficiency. Researchers at ULCA have
carved out a new method to deliver proteins efficiently and effectively by the
use of nanocapsules. Microscopic containers of nanocapsules have the capacity
to carry the protein cells effectively without letting them get degraded.
Nanocapsule containers allow the embedded protein inside it to travel safely to
the nearby cells before they interact with the molecular substrates The
nanocapsule membrane carrying protein remain intact or degrade depending on the
size of substrates it comes in contact with.
